EDMOND, Okla. — UPDATE 7/21/2022 8 a.m.: Authorities arrested a suspect in connection with a crash that killed an Edmond Police Department motorcycle officer Tuesday on the Broadway Extension.
An incident report says Edmond Police Sgt. C.J. Nelson was stopped on a police motorcycle when a driver in a Dodge Ram utility truck hit multiple vehicles. The driver told Oklahoma County deputies that he was overworked, very tired and driving very fast and could not stop his vehicle before the collision, according to the report.
Witnesses also told investigators that the suspect was driving very fast for the area and was not slowing down for traffic stopped at a red light.
The Edmond Police Department said a motorcycle officer is dead after a crash on Broadway Extension.
The crash occurred at Broadway Extension and Comfort Drive. Edmond police have not told us the officer’s name or how long he had been on the force.
The officer was taken to the hospital and paramedics tried CPR before the ambulance left.
Several agencies around the state have posted their support for Edmond police on Twitter and Facebook, including the sheriff’s offices in Oklahoma and Cleveland counties and the Yukon Police Department.
Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt also tweeted his condolences to the department.
“The seriously injured officer was taken to the hospital, where I’m sad to report, that he passed away from his injuries. Oklahoma City Police are doing the investigation on the motor vehicle crash. At this time, we just ask for your thoughts and prayers for the officer’s family, the department, and our community as we go through this difficult time,” said Larry Campbell, deputy chief at Edmond police.
